Your Step-by-Step Guide to Labeling Containers of Waste & Manifest Handling
At ADCO Environmental Services, LLC, we know that preparing your waste containers for pickup can feel overwhelming—especially when you receive shipping documents and labels in the mail. That’s why we created this simple guide to help you label your hazardous (and non-hazardous) waste containers properly and understand what to do when your paperwork arrives.
Even though ADCO coordinates with trusted third-party transporters and disposal partners, we remain your go-to point of contact throughout the entire waste disposal process, ensuring your waste is transported legally, safely, and in full compliance with USDOT and USEPA regulations.
What to Expect in Your Shipping Paperwork Packet
Once your waste profile has been approved, you’ll receive a FedEx delivery with the following contents:
- Hazardous or Non-Hazardous Waste Manifest
- Pre-printed container labels and markings
- Land Disposal Restriction (LDR) Form (Landban) (for hazardous waste only)
- Instructions on how to prepare/stage your shipment
ADCO tracks the delivery of your paperwork and notifies you when it’s on the way. Please don’t discard this packet—these materials are required for legal transportation of your waste.
Labeling Containers: What You Need to Know
Correct labeling is a critical part of the hazardous waste disposal process. Labels must meet USDOT and USEPA standards, and they must be applied before the transporter arrives at your site.
✅ For Containers of Hazardous Waste:
- Apply one full set of hazard class labels per drum or container.
- Include and apply container placards that are at least 4” x 4” to the container, making sure they are clearly visible, and are not obstructed.
- Use the yellow “Hazardous Waste Label” marking with:
- Accumulation Start Date
- Generator’s name and site address
- Manifest tracking number
✅ For Non-Hazardous Waste:
- Do not apply hazardous labels!
- Use only the provided non-hazardous or Universal waste labels.
- Ensure labels are securely affixed and clearly visible.
✅ For Totes, Pallets, and Cubic Yard Boxes:
- Place two full sets of labels on opposite sides of each large container.
- Verify labels match the waste type and reflect appropriate hazard classes (if any).
Visual examples are included in your instruction packet.
✍️ How to Handle Your Waste Manifest
Review and sign the waste manifest when the transporter arrives. Keep in mind, these are time-sensitive legal documents.
- Do not sign the manifest in advance.
- Confirm that container counts and details of what you are shipping match what’s listed on your paperwork.
- Sign the correct line:
- Line 15 for hazardous waste manifests
- Line 14 for non-hazardous manifests
- Keep your generator copy—the transporter will take the rest.
Sign and retain one copy of the LDR form (hazardous waste only).
What Can Delay or Prevent Pickup
Containers may be rejected if:
- Drums are leaking, dented, swollen, or excessively rusted
- Labels are missing, incorrect, or obscured
- Hazardous labels are on non-hazardous waste
- Poly liners are used where not permitted
- Required paperwork is incomplete or missing
Ensure all containers are sealed, labeled correctly, and free from residue on the outside.
